Facebook Announces Graph Search – Did we get what we wanted?

It’s been widely agreed that Facebook’s inbuilt search engine leaves a lot to be desired. Finding new people you may have met a few times is almost impossible unless you know their exact Facebook name – and God forbid the name is as common as John Smith!

On Tuesday, Zuckerberg and Co. unveiled their new brainchild – Graph Search, a new and quite specific way of sifting through the Facebook sphere. Phrases such as “Photos uploaded by my mum” and “John Smith who is friends with Nancy Lee”  or even “All friends who are engaged and live in Scotland” will apparently show you the desired results.

The search will also integrate web search results if you are looking for something outside of Facebook, such as “Weather report for London.” We are not sure how the results are chosen or what algorithm is used but it will be interesting to see how the experiment pans out.

Right now the service is in beta mode but is expected to be rolled out pretty soon. So what will you be searching for? And are you happy that the old search feature is no more?
