Digg takes a wrong turn with DiggBar

digg dialogg headerSocial news network Digg has got the blogsphere buzzing – and not with joy – after news of the latest release, the DiggBar. Using technology that presents other sites under a frame, means that users never leave Digg but browse within it. It is a way to steal content as many publishers see it.

This method became fashionable a few years back until even the worst spammers realised navigation was so bad, users could not stand it. So why would a respected social media news site take this approach?

The answer is simple, for money. And this is when it starts not making sense anymore. Communities evolve and people want to be acknowledged for their content, whether that is in Digg, Blogger, Facebook or anywhere else. The attempt to make links unworthy on all the high authority sites is only to help big money come forward in the search results and information sharing to be limited to those old fellows, the newspapers, do you remember them?

Digg was burdened with spam and the difficulty to fight internal spam is what hurts the site most. Digg will not win anything by being pushy to their invaluable contributors. They should sort out their house first, then look how to better police and add value for the people that make Digg the site it is.
